Most vineyard visits end when the light fades. At Everflyht, that’s when things get interesting.
The South Downs National Park is one of just five International Dark Sky Reserves in England. The designation is earned, not assigned. It means the skies here are genuinely, measurably dark. No orange wash on the horizon. No ambient glow drowning out what’s above you. On a clear night at the foot of Ditchling Beacon, the Milky Way isn’t something you squint for. It’s just there.
We’ve been running stargazing evenings at the estate for a while now, and the format hasn’t needed much adjustment. It works because the place does the work.
How an Evening Goes
You begin at twilight with a curated selection of sparkling wines. The Blanc de Noirs 2020 tends to find its way into most hands. There’s something grounding about drinking something made here, from the same soil you’re standing on, as the sky above starts to open up.
Then, as the light fully goes, a professional astronomer takes over. For an hour or so you move through the constellations and planets in a way that feels exploratory rather than encyclopaedic. Questions welcome. No quiz at the end. Just the kind of guided attention that makes you realise how long it’s been since you actually looked up.
It’s a small group. The Downs are quiet out here. The wine helps.
Not Only After Dark
If the evenings don’t suit, the estate also hosts daytime wellness sessions. Pilates and breathwork are the focus. Both run outside where the weather allows, with the vineyard rows as a backdrop. There’s a growing body of evidence around what outdoor movement does for the nervous system. There’s also just the simpler fact that moving your body somewhere beautiful feels different to moving it somewhere that isn’t.
Wine tourism in England has grown 55% in two years, according to Wine GB’s 2024 Tourism Report. What that number doesn’t capture is why. It’s not only about the wine. It’s about getting somewhere genuinely off the beaten track, spending time in the kind of countryside that asks nothing of you, and coming back feeling like you’ve actually stopped.
Everflyht sits right in the middle of that.

Stargazing evenings and wellness sessions run throughout the season. Spaces are limited and fill up quickly, particularly in spring and summer.
